Get It Together

The Communist University meets this afternoon at 17h00 at the Women’s Jail, 1 Kotze Street, Constitution Hill, to discuss excerpts from James Heartfield’s “Death of the Subject Explained”. In this work, published in 2002, Heartfield does a good job of rescuing the humanist understanding of freedom as the recognition of necessity, neither entirely self-regarding (fascist) nor entirely fatalist (post-modern), but rather a dialectical unity developed out of the fundamental question of philosophy, which is the relationship of consciousness to matter. Next week we take the same matter further and towards practical revolution, using and essay of Fischman and McLaren on Organic Intellectuals seen in the light of Gramsci’s and Freire’s work. During the day there is a march to the US embassy in Pretoria in support of the Cuban Five. See the linked leaflet and announcements from the ANC, SACP and Portuguese Communist Party. The SACP Johannesburg Central Branch will launch the Red October Campaign on transport at our usual pitch outside the Hillbrow Shoprite. See the linked notice. The difference this time is that the Shoprite workers are on strike, so we will express out solidarity with them, too. Do please boycott all Shoprite/Checkers outlets until further notice. Next Wednesday the Swaziland Solidarity Network is meeting (please come along) to discuss the holding of an AGM. It looks like one of the solidarity entities is moving towards becoming an organised mass structure of South Africans at last. All the South African organisations of international solidarity should be like that. Finally, have you forgotten the “analysts” banned by the SABC? The Young Communist League has not forgotten the story. In the document linked below the YCL demands disclosure to the public of the report commissioned on the matter.
